First Class in Statistics 5/10/11

It happened again; After my first class, tonight, in Statistics,I had parked on the others side of the campus,I was walking through the quad. I had my book bag on wheels, wheeling across campus. It was late 8:50pm. light when I went into class ,but now leaving at night, dim lighting on campus. I had an over whelming feeling of Honor and Privilege. I am a University Student. Tim Harper,the Son of Patrick and Dorothy Harper, the Husband of Brenda,Brother of PJ and Danny, the Father of Eric,David,and Chris, the Grandfather of Lillian Jade Harper. It is no longer about pass or fail,but how you play the game. I am in the middle of the game. I am enjoying being educated at the university level. I wanted this more than I ever imagined( I didn't dare dream the dream for fear that I would be disappointed). that dream; like one day I would be attending a university,coming out of class late, strolling through the quad,(strutting my stuff),smart,capable and grateful. The Colonel Jack Jackson stopped by the studio and sat in on his ole show. It was great to see him. I gave him his Christmas present for Arleen and him.The biographies of Laura and George Bush and a picture of my Grand baby Lillian, were my gifts. The Colonel asked " How's algebra going?" I told him it is hard, I was at the University all day yesterday and was up to 2 am studying, but I was just trying to "man up" and do the work. He told me 90% is effort and only 10 % ability. That he had seen many students that had the ability but not the effort who didn't make it, but also (like me & him) who had to work hard and put forth the effort and were successful . He gave me that look of confidence that I would succeed and he was rooting for me. It's nice to have someone that believes in you and gives you encouragement . Also Mr Boehm my intermediate algebra instructor tries hard to teach me, and I don't want to let them down. I met with the tutor on Friday and spent the day at the University, studying. Today, I did the radio show this morning, and studied and met with 2nd tutor, this afternoon.I am hoping to keep up the momentum going into next week. and the story continues..............................................................................P & L Tim

The incident in AZ

I have been asked about my opinion on the AZ shooting. I feel sick to my stomach at the pain and loss of life. I have taken care of many shooting victims in my career as an Emergency Department Nurse, and know the suffering that takes place. Not only to the victim themselves ,but everyone else involved,like family members that suffer because their loved one has been hurt, then extended family suffers, the people caring for them in the hospital, their families, the citizens in Tuscan, Pima County, the whole state of AZ the people in America and friends throughout the world. The trauma extends pretty far. So, I feel sick to think of all this pain and suffering and Pray for the victims and everyone.Next people ask about the impact of radio talk shows. I try to be very responsible on the air, knowing I am responsible for my words,and that I have the ability to hurt someones feelings by saying something insensitive. I realize I am a professional person,and have a standard to ad hear to. Having said that if I do say something stupid please call the general manager of the radio station and complain, give me a chance to retract anything I say and please give me the chance to apologize. I am a Gentleman, grandfather , father ,husband,brother,uncle,cousin....etc I am human. I also get a chance to co-host a 3 hour radio show weekly,Called "The Local Show" 9am-12noon every Saturday on 1350am KWMO. We talk about local issues and local events and activities. Some times we get passionate ( which makes for good radio). But let me be clear, I do not support shooting people with guns. I don't like violence of any kind. I am not a big supporter of guns period. I am an American and enjoy free speech. I am Republican, Conservative, and tend to lean a little right. I am also a supporter of the Mental health system. I have worked part time in a mental health care facility.( 99% of people with Mental health issues are harmless) I believe there is wonderful care available. Opportunity

Yes, I am going to sign up for Intermediate Algebra. I was thinking it stressed me out so much last semester, taking Elementary Algebra,that I might not do it again. Then it occurred to me that I could not pass up this opportunity. I think back to when I didn't have the opportunity to go to the University,and I am so grateful now to be able to attend an institution of higher learning. It's not about pass or fail. It's about a dream fulfilled. Just getting to this level is more than I could ask for. Yes, it will be stressful again. Yes, I will work hard. Yes, I will struggle to meet the grade. But, I will be there. I will suit up and show up,as they say. I will enjoy the experience. I will be proud to realize the dream of my forefathers. I hope to set an example to future generations. One last note, it is so cool, to sling that book bag over your shoulder, and strut your stuff.

I passed Elementary Algebra

The last week. Mr Boehm sat me down and said,you can not get out of elementary algebra with out learning how to factor a quadric equation.I had one week to go, my grades were down. I needed to ace the final,to pass.I hired a tutor and explained what his responsibilities where. We met all day before the final, at about 4 pm, I got it. I showed up at the final exam cool.calm.and collected. I had my lucky #2 pencils, and my old fashion simply calculator. I was rested. My crib notes prepared. I am completely backed in to a corner,with my points, I had to ace the final exam, in order to pass the course. The Teacher Professor Boehm,handed me my paper first, and there it was the answers shooting out of the paper at me.I completed the exam and handed it in and Mr Boehm wished me a merry Christmas. So, I Had to wait for the final posting of the grade. This afternoon, I called and talked to the Professor.

He awarded me a " C " for the over all class. and he looks forward to teaching me Intermediate algebra, next semester. Thank You Mr Boehm, and thank you to everyone that helped me with homework and encouraged me.I am a University Level Elementary Algebra course completer.

Feeling cold and stupid/Algebra Final

Final Exam Elementary Algebra finished. grades will be posted Friday after noon the soonest.

Well how did I do?I attended the University of Maryville,St Louis Missouri, Chesterville.I got soon points form quizzes, some points from pre- test some points from the three 100 point test and some points from the final exam 150 points. Also the teacher explained to me that extra points come from attendance and class participation. Every week I was the first to arrive. I went around the other students,with there quiz ensuring the max 10 points for each quiz. the teacher allowed use to work with the other students.I was the only one that help every student in the class with there quiz.Last week everyone in the class got a 10 on the quiz. So I am the #1 attendance student. I am the number one participator in the class.Is it possible for me to pass the class.Yes,Slim chance. I learned a lot. On the University level. an honor i never imagined.Thank You Mr. Boehm. I am not a quitter, but I will come back strong. I will study hard over th winter break.I have been given a passion for algebra. I thank everyone that followed me though out the semester and supporting me

The review class was today and another quiz. I have strategically place my self in a potion that I have to ace the final exam, in order to Pass. Ha Ha I got em right where I want them. My head says: "run for your live ; your a failure". The other me says:'hold her steady"" you've been in tough positions before". I went around the class and helped the other students with their quiz. I was the last student out the door. I met early with the instructor( I was the first student in the building) and he helped explained some stuff for me. All the other students were struggling with the quiz, quiz=10 points,very important points.

Is it time to run? hide? listen to those people(teacher) that beat me growing up. My report card from first grade to eight grade was all d's and F's with comments, Timmy would do better if he stopped being the class clown; (Timmy would do well if you stopped projecting your miserable life on me and stop hitting me, it hurt). I never went to kindergarten. I started school in first grade. Adults suck. So, where do I go from here. I didn't have a dream to go to the University,but I am here at Maryville University St. Louis, Missouri. The goal was to avoid War,survive drug abuse,survive NYC, fall in love, have children,successful at my profession,live long enough to hold my Granddaughter (Lillian Jade Harper), due 12/14/2010, Blessed are those that heal the sick and injured.So,what do I do? What would you do? I have been in this position before. I keep swinging till the fight is over, It's not over ,yet.I have a trick up my sleeve.If you want trouble back me into the corner. If you want me to succeed tell me I can't do it.

It is truly amazing the wonderful friends our family has. Saturday night we met David's fiancées Family Keri has a great family, and we were welcomed with open arms into their family.So,cool. I am enjoying the process. I got an "A" on my last quiz. I spent the day studying. I am starting to understand. I was the first to arrive in class today and the last to leave. I listened to everything the teacher said,I wrote down and took note on every thing the teacher wrote on the blackboard.This was a dream of others not me or anyone I knew. Yet, by the Grace of a loving,caring, God , I have been giving the opportunity to learn, acquire knowledge, on the University level. I recently found my report cards from grades 1-8, evidently every grade was a "D" or "F" with little comments, like Timmy would do better if he stopped being the class clown and focus and do his work.( Timmy is thinking, maybe if you stopped hitting me, maybe I could concentrate).Ninth grade was an experiment school, 1973, for specially chosen students ,that were at risk for Drug or Alcohol abuse and drop out. Ran by Cops, for the cops, the horror 1. class, Marijuana 2.class uppers, 3.class,Downers, class 4. class LSD class 5.MDA class 6. Cocaine, class7. everything you ever wanted to know about heroin, how to melt it down,using your cigarette filter to draw it up,how to get a vein. the semester ended when detective Frank Luper was gunned down. experiment failed. know one said " hey you, kid, you street urchin,what University would you like to attend. It was more like, have you tried the army recruiter? I am honored to attend the University. I am enjoy the process. Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring,Using the Pythagorean Theorem, yea me. I dreamed one day studying at the University level, now I am there. Oh It's hard, but I am enjoying the opportunity to learn. I got a "B" on my last quiz. It's hard to imagine a junior high school drop out given this opportunity. If they could see me now, those teachers that didn't encourage me. Thank God I believe in myself. Thank God I have the grace of God. I am living the dream.

Hello hello! I have just returned from a 6 week tour of Europe, where I played guitar for Boston's Far From Finished! It was an amazing tour! Thanks to all who came out to those shows and to FFF for making me a part of it. if you haven't checked out Far From Finished, please do so immediately!!

Now that Im home, the Strummalongs are back in action! We are currently working on booking some local shows and possibly a tour later in the year, but we shall see! Dec 4 we will be performing w/ Fake Problems and Ninja Gun at the Firebird in STL. More details on that to come!

In other news, I have posted 10 of the 13 tracks off of our most recent release, Daily Life, on our Myspace page. I will be leaving them up for the next week or so. Please stop in and have a listen. Have you ever failed?

I have failed many times in my life. I am comfortable with failure. What I am not comfortable with is quitting. I am a surviver. What I have learned about failure, is get back on track, as quickly, as possible, dust your self off, go back at it. Yea, I felt defeated, sat in whinny world for a little while, than, I dust my self off, and move forward. See, as a failure, I have no other choice, but continue onward. My algebra is challenging. I got a failing grade on my last test. Remember, I didn't ask for attending the University to be easy, asked for one day to have the opportunity to attend and learn. I have that. I have learned. "If they could see me now". my grade points doesn't put me out of the race. I just have to step it up a notch. Today I spent today study for tonight's quiz. I feel I will get an "A" on this quiz. I get the results next week.See, I dusted my self off. Came back at it. Studied harder today. I am committed to learning this information. I will go down swinging. I will take Elementary Algebra next semester, and the semester after that, if I have to. I will not quit. I will obtain this knowledge. Let me tell you about to of my fellow failures. Thomas Edison and Babe Ruth. Babe Ruth struck out more then he hit home runs, held the record for strikeouts. but, he dusted him self off, didn't whine about his childhood(orphan). but when he hit a home run the whole country cheered. Thomas Edison failed experiment after experiment 1000's of times before a success. light- bulb., I was a middle school drop out, no opportunity for high school. My elementary school report cards relates "F" after"F" with little comments, oh Tim would do well if he stopped being the class clown he might improve. or,If he took work home ( that wasn't an option). Thanks to all those teachers that use to hit me. Sorry it didn't help improve my grades. I did teach me to eventually to stop crying. to define my own definition of failure. Like a teacher who hits little kids, and the kid still doesn't pass. I was very grateful Mr Baim didn't beat me in front of the class. actually he was quite generous with his grading. He seems like a kind man. He hasn't hit me yet. I am going to go down swinging. A lot of people are looking up to me. I am trying to pass this class.Albert Einstein was a poor student ,flunked math and kicked out of school. remember E=MC2, the theory of relativity, that was Albert. Those who look up to me. I am trying. I have already learned a lot from the Beginning . I am grateful. I am a Maryville University Student, I am a husband,father, Grandfather to be(12/15/10).I survived New York, I survived the USAF,I survived Community College,I survived Paramedic school LPN boards EMS school,GED(age16),New York School of hard knocks, La Guardia Community College at age 16, USAF Comm. College. Crafton Hills College,Paramedic school Yucipa CA,Riverside Community College, Riverside CA. many certifications in my related career field, computers, fax machines,telephone systems, pharmacology,cardiology,etc... I will succeed either this semester or the next. but, in the mean time, I am dusting my self off, and coming back strong. My Father was raised in a catholic orphanage in Brooklyn New York in the 1930's. think of the horror.he told me they beat him with a cat a nine tails and hung him by his arms in a closet all night.He told me he constantly had to fight to survive and protect his smaller younger foster brothers.At 17 he escaped and went in the army 1949 and was sent to the Korean war. There he learn how to kill with his bear hands, he was wounded twice, captured POW tortured and escaped.He was awarded the Bronze Star with the V insignia for Valor by General Ridgway on the battlefield.He raised a family, 4 boys, ran for mayor in Sherman Texas in 1962.he also ran and won the position as Guttenberg New Jersey Housing Commissioner. He built a Home for Seniors,over looking the Hudson river with a beautiful view of NYC.he owned an international Textile Corporation. He was a self made man. I posted a picture of him as an orphan. on Facebook. I had my own horrors as a child and teen.I am not prepared to explain what that means. Look at the pictures and try to figure it out.

A tonight in Algebra

Wow, my hard work is paying off. I got an A on the 1st test, the 4th quiz, and I think I did well tonight on the quiz. Today I studied all day. Did my homework. Arrived early to class. Had a cup of coffee. I sat in the front row ( as usual). I listen, and wrote down everything the teacher said. After the quiz I was the first one done with the quiz. The teacher said if you'd like to discuss the problems among yourselves, that it was OK. So, I got up and went around the class helping the other students. Half had 1 or 2 problems completed, and were stressing out so I helped them. I was the last to leave. Out of 50 students who started at the beginning of the semester only 12 are left. I have failed before but rarely do I quit. I will go down swinging. I go back and review, I look forward and preview. I set goals. I take lots and lots of notes and keep them very organized. I listen and make eye contact with the Teacher. I listen to the questions the other students ask. at Break I formed a click. I hope to form a study group next week. A Jr High school drop out.The last grade I completed was the 7th grade. Life had other plans at the time and I didn't have the opportunity to go to the the 8th grade, 9th grade,10th grade,11th grade or 12th grade. I went to Community College in the Air Force, got my EMT,EMT-P, LPN,& RN. I have spent 32 years as a professional in Emergency Nursing. I obtained an Associate of Science in Nursing Degree an RN. I have taken care of approx a half a million people. I thank God for the opportunities that have been given me. The opportunities to learn. A brain that can think. Family and friends support. 1st Algebra test

Well, it almost killed me the stress. I was gripped with fear and was unable to study. Today I looked into dropping the class. I decided to go down like a man. I've failed before., but quitting hurts. So, I suited up and showed up. A man walking to the gallows. I was over tired,& couldn't concentrate. Also there is a full moon tonight(what ever that means). I am just grateful for the opportunity to learn. I felt very alone , because no one but me can do the work. You get what you deserve. The test was 20 questions 5 points each. I took the test. I answered all 20 questions. I know I got some right, and some partial credit, a couple any points would be just plain mercy on the teachers part. Total 100 points. I have no idea how I did. I am grateful to the teacher,the school,my cognitive reasoning, all my friends and family support. I don't want to let anyone down, but I might not make it.Failure. So, I apologize to those that look up to me. I am still trying. I won't drop the class. I 'll go down swinging.My pray is not for good grades,but for the opportunity to learn. It's been a rush so far. I can study well for the next test. I am capable. I am scared. I am going to kneel down and say my prays, and not be alone.

2nd Day of Class

Well, I almost didn't go to class to day. I was scared to death.This stuff is hard. Then I remembered,showing up is 90% of the battle. So,I suit up & show up to class.Again, I am the first person there and I sit in the front row. I just know we are going to have our first quiz and I am not prepared.I didn't do all the homework I was told to do. I am have a little difficulty converting back to student life and study habits.I knew there are a lot of people that look up to me and I just couldn't face them if I didn't even try. Luckily, we didn't have to hand in the homework,but instead went over it in class.The numbers of students dropped by 20% from last week. I am glad I am not in those numbers.So, half way threw the class the teacher stopped and did a demonstration. He took a piece of paper and folded it in half,then folded it again and then again and again till he couldn't fold it any more. Then he asked if he folded 2 to the power of 40 , how thick would the paper be. considering the paper is like 1/100 of an inch thick.then he wrote 5 different answers on the board and asked,how many thinks it would be 12 inches thick, or 1 yard thick,or a 100yards or a mile ,or all the way to the moon. instantly I knew the answer before he wrote it on the board. I smiled. One person (me) raised his hand and said to the moon . he said there two people in this class that believe it is the moon. He also knew the answer was the moon.Remember ,last week I told you,the last time I had Algebra was 1969. the year Commander Neil Armstrong landed on the moon.I told you I had good teachers and I remember everything they taught me. One small step for man ,one giant leap for mankind.

Well, tonight I went to my first class at the University. Elementary Algebra,My last college was 30 years ago,community college for an Associates Degree.(I didn't have to take algebra but college mathematics instead) I didn't go to high school, because I didn't have the opportunity. the 8th grade was my last complete year.1972. the last time I had Algebra was 5&6th grade 1969 the same year the astronauts landed on the moon.I will say, that the teachers, I did have, were very good teachers,and I never forgot their gifts of education that where freely given to me.I only dreamed of going to the University. I never thought I was capable,for various reasons, pick one: money intelligence, self confidence,......
But after serving on the campaign with Col.Jack Jackson,along with my life experience I learned that I am capable. I think all ya need is at least one person who believes in you to achieve. I am in over my head.(but being in over my head has never stopped me before).My friend the Great True American Hero Col Jack Jackson,told me yesterday "your pretty bright;you'll do fine". My children are all at University. Eric-Tufts University Boston on a full scholastic scholarship 4.0 GPA,in Civil Engineering as a senior, David- Meramac Community college 4.0 GPA Chris- away at age 15 to Northwest Missouri State University at the Missouri Academy for Science, Mathematics,&Computing for 2 years, than transfered to Mizzou in Columbia University-Senior age 20.
Now out of the pile of weight, the world has thrown at me. arises,an accomplished man. I have 96 College Credits, 4 years in the Military.32 years in my career field, Married in March 30 years.3 great kids(young men),expecting a grand baby girl 12Dec2010.I have not been challenged intellectuality in a very long time.I feel it,I was born and raised in NYC.It was a challenging upbringing.I survived.I learned hard work,how to study and how to utilize my resources,I've learned to ask for help.use many different sources;the text book the workbook,class room attendance, and be the first to arrive and the last to leave.use the learning resource center, peer tutoring,multimedia source(computer).
The drill Sargent took us out side and made us stand at attention for 8 hours a day on the hot drill pad with our notebook and he would read the first line and than we would write the first line, this went on for days and days till we had copied the entire textbook. Everyone passed the test.
I am currently in over my head. One option would be to drop this class and go to the community college and take pre-algebra. The other ,harder option, is to man up and remember, who the hell I am. Lead,Follow,or Get out of the way. For a moment I felt the Magic that education is, like when you "get it" a problem right, and sit a little straighter in your chair. I was 2 hours early to study before class. and after class people had the opportunity to pick the instructor's brain for info.Well, I slung my book bag over my shoulder,the last person out the door. strutting my stuff.The hard part was just showing up and walking through my fears.
Next will be up early in the learning center and doing homework and review,get a tutor assigned to me,So, I will be up early.working hard. I will play the cards that have been dealt me. Don't feel sorry for me,I am no more special then any other student in my class. We all want it. Tonight I pray a prayer of thanks for having the opportunity to live my Dream and attend the University....The Greater Common denominator....... Tim

Water Balance - Essential for Life
Every gardener knows that her plot of land needs sufficient water to enable the flourishing of the plants, flowers, fruits, and vegetables under her care. Likewise, the human body needs sufficient daily watering so that health and well-being can continue to flourish. Most authoritative sources recommend daily consumption of eight glasses of water per day.

But most people don't come close to approaching the recommended minimum. Some don't even drink one daily glass of water. The result of failing to maintain proper water balance is a toxic internal environment. Biochemical processes break down and chronic disorders such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, asthma and allergies, and arthritis develop.

Drinking water is a simple and very cheap method of helping maintain good health. If you don't usually drink water, start with two glasses a day. From there build up to four glasses and then eight glasses per day. The Deep Horizon explosion has focused public attention on ocean, gulf, and wetlands ecologies. The grave threats posed to these environmental ecosystems can also focus attention on our own internal ecosystems.

We tend not to think of our human physiology in terms of ecosystems. But in fact the analogy is a close one. For example, water comprises approximately 70% of the earth's surface. The amount of water in the adult human body is estimated at between 60 and 70%. This is a startlingly similar correspondence. Water is the basis for human physiology, as it is the basis for the existence of life on earth. Our physiologic water is subject to the same ecologic stresses as is the water in our external environment.
Human blood is composed of approximately 90% water by volume. Your body attempts to control certain characteristics of blood very closely. For example, the acid-base balance of blood is maintained within a very tight range - a pH between 7.35 and 7.45. Blood levels of calcium are also tightly controlled, within a range of 8.5 to 10.5 milligrams for every 100 milliliters of blood. Lower calcium levels will cause calcium to be leeched out of bone to restore blood levels to within the normal range.

Just as oil has been washing up on the shores of the Louisiana coastline for many months during 2010, your body's internal coastlines can be similarly breached. Prolonged elevated blood levels of cholesterol, for example, will cause cholesterol to "wash up" on the surfaces of cells lining the walls of small blood vessels. These endothelial cells normally constitute an effective barrier, protecting the structures of arterioles and capillaries. But these cardiovascular coastlines can be damaged by cholesterol "spills", resulting in formation of arteriosclerotic plaque and narrowing of small blood vessels.1
Similarly, high levels of blood glucose (as in diabetes) can cause these simple sugars to wash up on the shores of small blood vessels in the kidney, retina, and nerves. Serious damage to kidneys, the eyes, and nerves can result.2,3

Failure to take appropriate precautions and heed warning signs is the likely cause of the Deep Horizon explosion. In order for us to ongoingly maintain a healthy inner ecology, we need to do what was not done in this oil-drilling operation. Making proactive lifestyle choices is a key to creating and supporting an inner ecology that will reward us with long-term health and well-being.

Nieves Named in City Police Complaint

Washington Police Chief Ken Hahn confirmed Friday that his office is conducting a police investigation into allegations against State Rep. Brian Nieves.
Earlier this week, Nieves won the Republican primary race for the 26th District state Senate seat now held by John Griesheimer, Washington.
A complaint against Nieves was filed Wednesday night against Nieves and a report was taken, Hahn told The Missourian. He did not release the name of the man who filed the complaint.
Nieves said he is not aware of the specific nature of the complaint against him, but denied any wrongdoing.
"The case currently is under investigation," Hahn said, noting that he would not comment on specifics contained in the report.
Sources have told The Missourian that the complaint involves an alleged assault and possible felonious restraint and that a handgun may have been displayed.
"There are rumors flying around but I have no idea what is going on. I don't even know the details of what Shawn Bell is alleging. Nothing happened in this office that was illegal and I have witnesses," Nieves said.
"The election is over, the people have spoken in a resounding way and it's a good time to move on," Nieves told The Missourian.
Bell worked on the campaign of Dick Stratman, an opponent of Nieves. Nieves sharply criticized Bell during the campaign on his local radio show alleging Bell was responsible for some of the negative attacks against him.
Hahn conceded that rumors about the alleged incident have been widely circulated in the Washington area in the last two days.
"Officially, we are still investigating," Hahn said.
He said after all interviews are conducted and reports completed, the case will be submitted to the prosecuting attorney's office unbelievable

We all tend to admire great people. People that have shaped the way the world is through their personal courage like Gandhi, or Nelson Mandela. Or others who have shaped the way we think, like Albert Einstein or Plato. And then there are those who inspire us because they overcame their limitations, like great athletes, or artists, or writers, or entrepreneurs, or discoverers, or inventors.

Compared with these giants of mankind, our lives can seem insignificant. But in fact, greatness is hidden within all of us. We just need to bring it out.

Are these three things holding you back?
We believe that we have limits.
I’m sure you can remember your parents or your teachers say something that implied that you’re somehow mediocre. Maybe they said that you weren’t intelligent enough, or talented enough, or -well – simply not good enough.
We buy into social myths.
When people say that we are too young, or too old, or too stupid, or that we are the wrong gender, to achieve our dreams – we tend to believe them. Greatness means transcending social norms. It means letting go of what other people think we can or can’t achieve. Remember that it’s not your business what others think about you.
We harbor secret self doubts.
What do you really feel about yourself? Are you confident – or do you have self-doubts? Lack of confidence saps the energy we need to make our life into something of value – not just for ourselves, but for those whose lives we touch. Our self-doubts are the negative voices that we heard from others when we were little. We not only internalize these negative messages, we’ve tend to amplify them. A good starting point for letting go of self-doubts is to actually notice the negative messages in your mind. Awareness is the first step of change.
Here’s how to bring out the greatness within:
Trust your dream
Greatness comes in many sizes. Greatness means that you become fully yourself and transcend your doubts and perceived limitations. Greatness doesn’t mean that you need to do huge things. It means that whatever you do, you pour into it your complete being.
Gear up with passion.
Passion is what gives us the strength to follow our dreams. It’s the powerhouse that can uncover our hidden greatness. Because passion drives us forward and allows us to overcome setbacks and obstacles.
Don’t thrash.
Imagine a boating accident where everyone falls overboard. Who do you think has the best chance of survival – the one who’s in panic and thrashes around, or the one who thinks clearly about the best strategy -whether it’s safer to cling to the wreck, to swim to shore, or to stay afloat until rescue arrives? My money would be on the resourceful one who conserve energy and make a plan. The same principle is important when overcoming hardship. Don’t thrash – create a survival plan instead.
Get up after falling.
Failure and making mistakes are inevitable – if you’re human. Just look at how often toddlers fall over when they learn to walk. I think the reason many of us give up after initial problems is because failure seems to reinforce hidden self-doubts. Actually, making mistakes means that you are learning. One way to increase success is to increase your failure rate. Because each so-called failure overcome is a step forward towards actualizing your dream.
Count your blessings.
Sometimes we tend to focus on difficulties, and not on what is going well. That can get us down, instead of lifting us up. I recently got an email from a reader who described her life as two steps back and one step forward because of her lack of confidence. Sounds familiar? But the amazing thing is that she is in the process of completing a PHD. What that means is that she has already gone through a huge, successful journey of getting to where she is. However, her self-doubts are preventing her from actually seeing how well she’s doing – even though she’s got challenges to overcome.
Don’t listen to the knockers
Many people are quite negative because they feel bad about themselves. They want to pull down achievers to their own level. Remember that their criticism of you is just an expression of their own self-doubts and fears.
Put your heart, soul, and sweat into your dreams.
Great people work incredibly hard – success doesn’t come by accident. I recently got an email, saying, “I want to be successful without having to do much.” Sorry, friend – but that’s not how it works!

Y R U Afraid?
Are you fearful as you approach big projects or major presentations, a dinner with company bigwigs, networking? A colleague the other day expressed surprise when I told him how fearful I used to be at leading groups because I am certainly confident NOW. I wasn't when I was in the same beginning place as he. Today I may be nervous or tensely focused; but generally not afraid.

My TV appearances as The Job Doctor, speaking and facilitating groups helped me learn the following about managing fear:

1. Know your material. To your bones. And have every word of the first two minutes down COLD. If you walk in with only HEAD knowing, with lack of solid rehearsal, without understanding exactly where everything is going, you will be fearful, scattered. If you know it in your gut, you can handle surprises that inevitably happen. With television, people roam the studio, crises crash around you, and you have to stay focused, smiling, PERFORMING. TV tip for learning those two minutes: Look at an unmoving object while you recite your first words. If your eyes stray, you're searching your brain for what to say. Recite it and stare till you don't need to look away.

2. Get as much "performing" experience as you can. Speeches, presentations, facilitations, teaching, leading meetings. All fear-producing experiences. The more you do, the less afraid you'll be. I was on television every week for 12 years. For the first five, I was so frightened when I sat on the news set I thought I'd have a heart attack. Then it went away. I used to throw up before I went on stage; after awhile, I didn't. But you have to step into fearful experiences again and again, whether it's making cold calls or conducting training or talking to your company president, to finally know you're competent - maybe an expert - at this.

3. Respect the extended learning process. You can't bring spring a day sooner. You can't evade this numbers game. The more you do it, the better you'll get. Do it a lot and the fear will fade.

4. Embrace the fear. You need its edge. Stage fright is a great performance booster. I'm worried when I DON'T have it. It's an energy your audience needs to see in you. It's your invitation to them to join you in an exciting, pumped place.

5. It's about you first, but it's really about them. If you are shivering-fearful, then you are totally self absorbed and you'd better get out of it. This is necessary YOU: Material. Beginning. Where we're going. Lookin' your best. Once you take care of that, then pay attention to what they're paying you for: the participants, the audience, the executives, the results.

This is your focus on THEM: How can I be of service? What's my job here? What are they here to achieve? How can I add value? What got my head out of my behind was The Tao of Leadership. Standing in fear before performing, I would open it to a random page, and this book of little wisdoms always made the perfect point to laser my attention on the other, not me. You need ego. You also must put it away. Both are required for doing this work.

6. Have something that anchors you. You can tell how afraid I am by how much jewelry I'm wearing. Pearls make me feel better. If you see bracelets, earrings, rings, a rope of 10 mm. oyster spit around my neck and a hot line to the Macy's pearls counter scribbled on my hand, you know I'm shakin' in my boots. In a difficult class I taught, I put a little toy bee on the podium, to remind me I had a B-HAG, a big, hairy goal with these students. Take with you something that makes you laugh or reminds you you're solid, prepared, eager to contribute.

7. This time tomorrow, it'll all be over. This mantra helps you realize the transience of even this challenging task. You may be fabulous. They may be fractious. You may take them to a higher plain. But it will be O-V-E-R. Comfort yourself with that final fear-busting thought.

I got to spend time with Jack yesterday.Things are going really well with the campaign. Jack's plan to bring new jobs directly to the 26TH District is on tract.He's untangling the strangulation knot on small businesses. He's is using his national and international contacts to bring in industry. I am learning so much from Jack, you can feel his leadership and experience as he brings together our district.I am not sure exactly what it is about Jack that motivates people to strive to help our community, whether it's the Master's Degree in Human Resources from Pepperdine University, or his Degree from Purdue or the advance training in Maryland at the Navy Test Pilot School where he earned an Aviation Engineering Degree equivalent to a civilian Masters Degree, heck, it might have been the 668 combat missions over south east Asia, or all those years at Boeing as Senior Test Pilot dealing with million dollar contracts, or just hovering over the Arch in all those air shows in his Boeing Marine Corp Harrier Jet,or being called back into service during the Gulf War. He motivates me to be my best. I am very fortunate to be able to call Jack a friend,and know that my community will be lead the next four years by Greatness...Peace & Respect...Tim Harper

I am a nurse. I have been very fortunate to have been able to care for the sick,for the last 30 years. Currently, here in the mid west, the influenza bug is here, in full bloom. The eye of a hurricane, of the world- wide pandemic, category 5, "Swine Flu" H1N1. People are scared. I've blogged before about the flu and recommended some basic common sense stuff that people could do;like hand washing, covering your month when you cough,eating a healthy diet , exercising, and getting a good night's sleep. Just some basic health advice for living as a human being on the planet earth. Now I am telling you what to do if you do get sick. Just basic common sense stuff. First, when your sick, you want someone to know, and know that someone cares. Empathy and caring that someone is hurting or suffering, goes along way. This comes from your heart. Deep down where healing takes place. Second, Stop. go to bed, you are sick and it's going to take a little time to get better. Bed rest goes along way. Thirdly, fluids, hydration,( chicken noodle soup),water basic H2O. get a glass of water and put next to the bed. take a table spoon and always drink some water even at the worst moment in your illness, even if it's like one or two table spoons of water, every 15 mins or so. Water goes along way. it doesn't necessarily have to be super dooper fruit berry juice that cost a hundred dollars a bottle. If any thing a little Gatorade might be helpful. Now I am not trying to be a smart alex or sarcastic, I really am trying to be helpful. when I was 9 years old the Hong Kong flu hit my family in California. everybody was full blown knocked down to bed rest for one full week.My Dad who was superman, a combat harden Korean war veteran was bed ridden. We all had to basically care for ourselves it was every man for himself.I remember my parents cared that all of us kids got better.I remember bed rest. I remember time and I remember fluids ( chicken noodle soup in particular),fluids.I am not a doctor and I don't play one on the computer. I am a nurse who cares for people that are sick. I know it's scary and it hurts. Remember someone cares. We will all get through this. I will be at the hospital if you need anything. Peace and Love Tim

So, I call the electric company and they tell me it's the phone and cable companies lines, so I call the telephone company and they tell me it's not their job. A ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Warrenton city hall. Than over to the Thrasher fair for more campaigning. Than out to the University at Columbia Missouri to drop off the newly restored Vista Cruiser for Chris " the Crusher" Harper. Than home for some computer work and a nap. Wow! Hair today gone tomorrow. Donated my hair to Locks for love. For children with cancer, so they can make wigs out of real hair.It makes the wigs look more realistic and the kids feel less self conscious.So, I have cut my hair short and am letting my freak flag fly for a good cause.

I Love A Parade

Last Saturday, I was in a Parade. I am helping with the campaign for Jack Jackson for State Senate for the 26th district here in Missouri www.jackjackson.org My job was handing out candy and taking Photos. It was so much fun. America is alive and well. People were smiling,waving,and having fun. It was a celebration for the town of Pacific Missouri's 150th anerversity. Things are going well here at home. We can't wait till Chris comes home form college on the 14th, for a week then he is taking some summer classes, and rented an apartment, in Colombia Missouri. I know he likes to mow the lawn, so I have been saving that for him to do. A big shout out to John,who wanted me to update my blog. I have been busy,going here and there. I am enjoying my new car. It has XM radio which is cool. I enjoy all the messages on twitter, they are funny. I have not seen a single case of the 2009 H1N1 Influenza. I think the Health Department over reacted and pulled the trigger to soon.Wait it could get worse though. So, hand washing,covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze. eat well. exersise regulary,get plenty of sleep, are all good ideas always. So, smile , think good thoughts ,reach out to others. State Capital Trip, Jefferson City,Missouri

Today,I went to the State Capital,In Jefferson City, Missouri. I met with Legislators in the House of representatives and State Senate. I sat in sessions in both the House and Senate. They were discussing health care issues. Then we had lunch with Lt.Governor Peter Kinder. Then I went and toured the Governor's Mansion. I met the First Lady of Missouri Mrs Nixon and there Dog "Boone" a beautiful large brown and white Cocker Spaniel. Vice President Joe Biden was in Jefferson City today, there were cops everywhere. I had a great day,today. I participated in the Governing of my community. I met a lot of hard working people,that are trying make our State better. It will be even better when my friend Jack Jackson www.jackjackson.org is elected for 2010 ( 20 months from now ).I had a good day, learned a lot, and had fun. Now to get on the campaign trail and help my friend Jack Jackson get elected to the State Senate Seat for the 26th district. See you on the trail...Warren County Republican Delegate....Timothy A. Beautiful Day

I finally have a day off work. This gives me a chance to center myself. I am living today, spiritually. I am listening to the birds sing. I am experiencing my Higher Power's grace. I am free to be me. I am able to think good thoughts. I am able to maintain a success consciousness. Today, I am experiencing the warm sun,the gentle breeze,the birds singing and the gentle ripples on the lake. I know peace.

I know people are worried about the economy. What I do to combat this worry is donate to charity. I give to St Jude's Children's Hospital and the March of Dimes. Currency flows. I feel the only way to get is to give. I believe the only way we will get through this financial downturn is by helping each other. I have been Blessed by people that helped me.

Smile, It's spring. Know peace. Know the Grace of a Higher Power.Give,and forgive.

Gratitude

I was having a pretty low day. When the nursing agency call and said they had an extra nursing case for me. This gives me a chance to moonlight and make a little extra money. So I agreed to it. they said, it's in a bad neighbor hood,the house was small and they had a dog, and the pay is 25%less then normal and they have a hard time keeping nurses going there because the gun shots in the area. Well I told them I came from humble beginnings and, dogs, small houses, bad neighborhoods.don't bother me, I am from New York City. 60 minutes did a segment, showing one block from my apt, in Jamaica, Queens, New York, as the most dangerous corner in the country. So, I walk with God and stay safe.

So I go for orientation for a 13 year old boy that has special needs and is unable to breath with out this ventilator machine. otherwise he seems like a cool kid. His mother stated he has never had a male nurse and was looking forward to the camaraderie.I met the whole family they all like me and I like them.This child can't wait till I return on Tuesday, I am going to be able to pull 4 or 5 shifts this month of March 09.It's funny how God would be so kind as to let me take care of this young man.God must have known I was feeling down and decided to shine down on me. Such a nice day here in Missouri

OMG,What a nice day it is temp 72 degrees in my back yard. The sun is warm and healing. I got such a good nights sleep last night and awoke refreshed. I said my prayers,then turned on the radio Lynard Skynard was playing sweet home Alabama,(Turn it up) than I had a shower, I had a banana for breakfast.Than I went to the YMCA in Washington Missouri and worked out for a couple of hours,then I walked around the Lake at Rotary Park in Washington.Wow,That was easy to take.I came home took a jacuzzi and had an apple for lunch.Now I am listening to the birds singing off my deck. they are happy it's a nice day too.I hope you all get a chance to get out for a little while today.Have a nice day....Peace,Love,and Respect.....Ponytail Tim

11years clean and serene

Well,I awoke today Sober, not having used drugs or alcohol for 11 years. It's a good feeling. No headache, no chaos, no crisis. To have people that I love and care about and people that love and care about me is really cool.I work a 12 step spiritual program, based upon progress along spiritual lines( not perfection). The indispensable principles are Honesty, open mindedness,and Willingness. Some of the other spiritual principles that make my recovery possible are Acceptance,Faith,Surrender,Hope, Commitment,Courage,Humility,Service,Unconditional Love,Integrity,Perseverance,Discipline,God-centeredness,Awareness,Vigilance,Sharing & Caring,Patience,Forgiveness,Optimism,Selflessness, Compassion,Consideration,Kindness,Positive Thinking,Responsibility,Tolerance,Trust,Unity,and Gratitude.

Some of the things going on in my life over the last year are,I turned 50,I started taking guitar lessons and have performed several times in public.I switched to an all vegetarian diet ( and have lost 30lbs), I started working out at the YMCA and have enrolled in an aerobics class call Zumba which is based on Latin dance,I am trying to get the outfit Jack Black wore in Nacho Libre with the mask and all.(I'll post pictures soon) The class starts 2/26/09. In August, Brenda and I became empty nesters. All the Kids moved out and are doing well, very successful.I am so proud of them all.

Thank you all for helping me. Every time, someone gave me, a hug or a word of encouragement, it really meant a lot to me .Keep giving out those hugs. US Senator Bond Not to Seek Re-Election

U.S. Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond,R-MO announced today he will not seek re-election in 2010. Rumor has it that U.S.Rep.Roy Blunt,R-Mo will seek the Senate Seat. Also rumor has it that Democrat Robin Carnahan Missouri Sectary of State is also going to seek the seat. This will make Senator Claire McCaskill the Senior Senator from Missouri in 2010.It will be an interesting campaign. Kit Bond is my friend and has done a lot for the state of Missouri, namely brought lots of money to our state.
